Chapter 5 - THE SECRET INSIDE CAPTAIN PEANUT

I opened the stitching myself.
Not because I expected to find treasure.
Because I recognized the thread.
Benjamin had repaired one of Captain Peanut's seams shortly before he disappeared.
I remembered teasing him about his terrible sewing.
He laughed and said he was making sure the elephant would last until our baby grew old enough to have children of her own.
Now I understood why the stitching looked different.
I carefully separated it.
Inside the stuffing was a small waterproof pouch.
My hands began shaking.
I pulled it free.
A tiny memory card.
And a folded strip of paper.
Benjamin's handwriting.
For Elena. If I can't explain what happened, this will.
I sat down on the bedroom floor.
Mia looked worried.
“Did Daddy put a treasure in there?”
I swallowed.
“I think he did, sweetheart.”
She smiled.
“Then Captain Peanut did a good job.”
I hugged her so tightly she squealed.
Then I asked Mrs. Whitmore to sit with her while I took the memory card downstairs.
Adrian, Gabriel, and Rachel were waiting.
Rachel arranged for the card to be copied and examined without altering the original.
The first folder contained spreadsheets.
Foundation accounts.
Transaction histories.
Names of shell companies.
Payments disguised as construction costs, medical grants, and emergency assistance.
The second folder contained photographs of signed documents.
The third held a video.
Benjamin appeared on the screen.
Alive.
Tired.
Terrified.
I covered my mouth.
His voice filled the room.
“My name is Benjamin Hayes. I work as financial controller for the Kane Children's Relief Foundation.”
He looked toward something outside the camera's view.
Then continued.
“I have identified approximately eighteen million dollars in unauthorized transfers. Some of the funds were intended for children receiving medical treatment and families displaced by violence.”
Adrian's face hardened.
Benjamin explained that the transfers appeared to be routed through companies linked to Victor Kane.
He had copied the records because he feared someone was altering the foundation's accounting system.
Then he said something that made Adrian sit forward.
“Adrian Kane does not appear to know about these transactions.”
My breath caught.
Benjamin continued.
“Victor repeatedly claims that Adrian approved the transfers, but I have not found valid authorizations supporting that claim.”
I looked at Adrian.
For the first time, the suspicion I had carried for six years began to crack.
Then Benjamin leaned closer to the camera.
“If anything happens to me, Elena needs to know I did not steal this money. Everything I did was intended to protect the foundation and the people it was supposed to help.”
I started crying.
His face filled the screen.
The face I had dreamed about for six years.
Then Benjamin's expression changed.
Someone had apparently knocked on his door.
He looked toward it.
The recording shook slightly as he reached for the camera.
Then he whispered one final sentence.
“Victor isn't working alone.”
The video ended.
Gabriel immediately opened another file.
A scanned document containing a list of people who approved the suspicious transfers.
Victor's name appeared repeatedly.
Then another.
Daniel Price.
The supposedly dead security officer.
And beneath those names was a third signature.
One I recognized immediately.
May you like
Mrs. Whitmore.
The woman currently sitting upstairs with my daughter.
