Chapter 12 - THE TRUTH ABOUT ZACH

Michael didn't speak for almost a full minute.
Then he asked the doctor to leave.
I stayed because Zach had fallen asleep beside me.
“This is wrong,” Michael said.
Maybe to me.
Maybe to himself.
“I was there when he was born.”
I didn't know what to say.
“He's your son.”
Michael looked at me.
“You don't know that.”
“Yes, I do.”
His face hardened.
“I mean biologically.”
“I don't.”
I lowered my voice.
“But neither biology nor a laboratory raised him for six years.”
That reached him.
Not completely.
But enough.
Michael ordered a private DNA test.
The result confirmed it.
No biological match.
His late wife, Sofia, had never told him.
Lorenzo knew nothing.
Michael disappeared into his study for hours.
I found him after midnight holding a photograph of Sofia.
“Do you hate her?”
“I don't know.”
Fair answer.
He looked exhausted.
“If Zach isn't mine—”
“Don't finish that sentence.”
His eyes lifted.
“He is yours.”
“What if someone comes for him?”
That was the real fear.
Not betrayal.
Loss.
Michael's attorneys began quietly reviewing Sofia's records.
Six years earlier, she had traveled frequently for work.
One name appeared repeatedly in old messages.
Dr. Adrian Cole.
A cardiologist.
Zach's biological father, perhaps?
We didn't know.
Then we discovered Adrian had died seven years earlier.
Before Zach's birth.
His sister, however, was alive.
She provided a DNA sample voluntarily.
Familial match.
Adrian was Zach's biological father.
Michael went completely still when he heard.
Not because of the affair.
Because Adrian Cole had been his best friend.
The best man at his wedding.
The one person Michael trusted outside family.
“What happened between them?” I asked Lorenzo.
He looked uncomfortable.
“Sofia and Michael separated briefly.”
Michael had never told me.
Six months.
During that time, Sofia and Adrian became involved.
Then Adrian was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer.
He ended the relationship.
Sofia reconciled with Michael.
She discovered the pregnancy afterward.
She apparently believed Adrian was the father but never confirmed it.
Michael signed the birth certificate.
Raised Zach.
Loved him.
Nothing about the truth changed the previous six years.
But Michael struggled anyway.
Then Zach overheard one sentence he was never supposed to hear.
“You're not his biological father.”
A lawyer said it in the hallway.
Zach stood behind the door.
His face crumpled.
He ran.
Again.
This time only into the garden.
Michael found him beneath a tree.
I stayed back.
This wasn't mine to fix.
“Are you not my dad?” Zach asked.
Michael dropped to his knees.
“I am your dad.”
“But the doctor said—”
“The doctor said someone else helped make you.”
Zach cried harder.
“Then are you giving me away?”
Michael's face broke.
He pulled Zach against his chest.
“Never.”
“Promise?”
Michael held out his pinky.
I had to look away.
“Promise.”
Three days later, Zach underwent the cardiac procedure.
It went well.
Lorenzo donated blood as a precaution.
Michael never left his bedside.
Neither did I.
When Zach woke groggy, he looked at both of us.
“Did I die?”
“No,” Michael said.
“Good.”
Then his eyes moved to me.
“Are you still gonna marry Dad?”
I nearly dropped my coffee.
Michael actually laughed.
It was the first full laugh I'd heard from him.
“No plans,” I said.
Zach frowned.
“You guys are slow.”
Maybe.
But that evening another piece of Sofia's past surfaced.
She had left a sealed letter with her attorney.
To be delivered to Michael only if questions ever arose about Zach's paternity.
Michael opened it alone.
Then found me on the hospital balcony.
His eyes were wet.
“What did she say?”
He handed me the final page.
Sofia admitted the truth.
Apologized.
And then wrote something neither of us expected.
Adrian knew Zach might be his.
Before he died, he created a trust for the child.

The current value was more than nine million dollars.
And someone had been secretly withdrawing money from it for five years.
