Chapter 8 - THE MISSING EMBRYO WAS REGISTERED TO A WOMAN WE KNEW

We traced the embryo through storage invoices.
Northstar transferred twenty-seven cryogenic samples to an affiliated laboratory in New Jersey before shutting down.
Then that lab sold storage operations.
The embryo code changed.
FIONA-B became:
JW-4421.
Why JW?
Recipient initials perhaps.
Then final location:
Aurora Reproductive Center.
Philadelphia.
Status:
Transferred.
Not merely stored.
My stomach dropped.
Transferred to whom?
Medical privacy required legal process.
Jessi’s attorney moved fast because genetic material contained her egg and possible unauthorized disposition.
The clinic cooperated under court order.
Transfer date:
Fourteen months earlier.
Recipient:
Kelly Mercer.
Kelly.
The cousin who sent us the birthday video.
No.
Jessi whispered:
“That’s impossible.”
Kelly was thirty-one.
Single.
She had recently had a baby girl.
Six months old.
I remembered family photographs.
Wendy holding the infant.
Luca? Wrong story. Jessi.
Everyone saying baby looked like Mercer side.
My pulse became thunder.
Kelly arrived with attorney.
She looked terrified.
“I did IVF.”
“With what embryo?”
She cried.
“I thought it was mine.”
What?
Kelly underwent egg retrieval.
Created embryos with donor sperm.
One transfer failed.
Second transfer succeeded.
She believed clinic used her embryo.
But inventory record showed JW-4421—Jessi/Elias embryo—was thawed same day.
Could be clerical error.
We tested only if Kelly consented.
She did.
Her baby, Lucy, was genetically Kelly’s daughter?
DNA:
Kelly was not biological mother.
Jessi was.
No.
Elias Warren was biological father.
Lucy and Fiona were full genetic siblings.
Kelly had unknowingly carried and delivered Jessi’s embryo.
My wife nearly collapsed.
Kelly screamed:
“They gave me someone else’s baby?”
Legally, Kelly was likely mother under birth/gestational laws depending jurisdiction, but genetics created huge issue.
No one wanted to rip child away.
That was first principle.
Lucy knew Kelly.
Kelly loved her.
Jessi did not want to “claim” an infant she had never parented.
But she had right to know how her embryo was used.
Consent violation enormous.
Then why Kelly?
Coincidence?
Maybe not.
Aurora records.
Referral:
Wendy Mercer.
My fists tightened.
Wendy referred Kelly to clinic.
Paid part of treatment.
Did she know embryo?
She claimed no.
Then old email:
WENDY to AURORA coordinator:
Use the family-compatible embryo if available.
What did that mean?
Coordinator thought Wendy referred to Kelly’s own embryo created with a Mercer-family donor? Confusion.
Then another:
WENDY:
Do not disclose original Northstar coding. It causes unnecessary anxiety.
There.
She knew.
Wendy had arranged for Kelly to carry the missing embryo.
Why?
She said Kelly desperately wanted a child.
And Wendy feared embryo might be destroyed during Northstar investigation.
So she “saved” it.
Without Jessi.
Without me.
Without Kelly.
Again deciding outcome mattered more than consent.
Then Kelly looked at Wendy through video hearing.
“You used my body.”
Wendy cried.
“I gave you Lucy.”
Kelly said:
“No. You took away my right to know what you were putting inside me.”
Exactly.
Then Fiona.
How to handle relationship?
Lucy was her biological full sister.
Kelly was her cousin socially and Lucy’s mother legally/gestationally.
Families got messy.
We consulted therapists.
No secrecy eventually.
Age-appropriate later.
No immediate identity bomb.
Then Elias Trust.
Lucy might also qualify biologically.
Would that affect money?
Yes.
Potentially.
Wendy had perhaps known.
If Lucy became another Elias descendant, trust distributions could grow.
Did Wendy gain control?
No.
But Kelly, as Lucy’s guardian, might.
Wendy may have wanted another family branch she could influence.
Financial motive again.
Then Kelly said something:
“Grandma told me if anything happened to her, Lucy would be my security.”
There.
Inheritance.
She framed child as financial security too.
Then legal fallout for Aurora.
They claimed they relied on Northstar documents representing Wendy as authorized family representative.
No excuse if recipient consent misrepresented.
Investigations.
Then Jessi asked me:
“How many children did our parents decide belonged to us?”
I had no answer.
Then we made one decision:
Search every remaining Northstar embryo record tied to us.
No more surprises.
Results:
No other viable embryos from Jessi.
No other confirmed children besides Fiona and Lucy.
Relief.
Then Northstar archive contained one final file unrelated to fertility.
FIONA WHITLOCK - BEHAVIORAL GUARDIANSHIP PROJECT.
Wendy’s secret evaluations.
We opened.
Notes from “purple glasses” psychologist:
Fiona consistently reports secure attachment to both parents.
No evidence of neglect.
Child appears anxious primarily when grandmother discusses secrecy or parental harm.
Good.
The psychologist had noticed.
Then:
Recommend discontinuing grandmother-led evaluations.
Wendy ignored.
Another note:
Grandmother requested report language emphasizing father travel and maternal emotional history. Request declined.
So professional had not conspired.
Wendy tried.
Then final email from psychologist to Wendy:
If you continue telling Fiona her mother may be hurt if she speaks, I will make a mandated report.
Date:
The morning before my Chicago trip.
Wendy knew she was about to be reported.
That was why she rushed Fiona back to clinic one final time.
Not merely guardianship.
She was trying to get a new evaluator before the old one spoke.
Then who stopped mandated report?
The psychologist sent it.
To Connecticut child-protection authorities.
But report was screened, pending follow-up.
Before any visit, Wendy took Fiona again.
Now all evidence aligned.
Then my attorney said:
“There is one more name on the behavioral file.”
Emergency guardian candidate:
Daniel Mercer.
The “dead” uncle.
Wendy planned, if she gained enough evidence against us, to install Daniel as temporary guardian for Fiona.
Why Daniel?
Because she controlled him financially.
And because legally, if his death status corrected, he was maternal uncle.
She was building an entire substitute family around our daughter.
Then Daniel read his own name.
He started shaking.
“I never agreed.”
Maybe.
Then signature page.
Daniel Mercer.
Signed.
He stared.
“That’s mine.”
My blood went cold.
“When?”
He closed his eyes.
“Three years ago.”
Wendy told him it was a backup guardianship form in case Jessi and I died in a plane crash.
He signed.
Again papers.
Again assumptions.
Then:
“Did she mention Fiona’s trust?”
“No.”
But form granted Daniel authority over certain trust protections.
Wendy had been positioning him for years.
Then Daniel whispered:
“I think Mom wanted you gone before she ever wanted custody.”
“What?”
He found old emails.
Wendy to Harbor Peak’s Samuel Grant:
If Graham’s travel schedule becomes permanent, Jessica will eventually collapse under pressure.
Samuel:
Then guardianship becomes easier.
My stomach turned.
They were not planning physical harm.
They were planning exhaustion.
Work.
Absence.
Marriage strain.
Then trust intervention.
A slow takeover of my family.
And the Chicago acquisition was designed to increase my travel dramatically for two years.
May you like
Harbor Peak had selected me as buyer partly because they knew it would pull me away from Greenwich.
The deal itself had been bait.
