Chapter 14 - THE BROTHER WHO WANTED EVERYTHING

Arthur stared at my father's letter for a long time.
"Vincent is my brother?"
His voice sounded hollow.
Agent Miller studied the documents.
The records showed that Arthur's father had maintained a secret relationship years before Arthur was born.
Vincent Russo was the result.
He had grown up knowing his connection to the Romano family while Arthur remained unaware.
For years, Vincent had worked beside Arthur, earning his trust, learning his weaknesses, and quietly building his own network of influence.
Then Luca discovered the truth.
Not just about Vincent's parentage.
But about the illegal adoption operation Vincent was secretly financing.
Luca had planned to tell Arthur.
Vincent made sure he never got the chance.
I watched Arthur absorb the betrayal.
One brother murdered.
Another brother responsible.
A wife driven into years of fear.
Two children stolen.
And a life built on secrets.
I expected him to explode.
Instead, he sat quietly.
"What happens now?" he asked Agent Miller.
"We finish the investigation and find Vincent."
Arthur nodded.
"No revenge?"
Miller studied him.
"Is that what you want?"
He looked toward the photograph of Rosie.
Then toward Nicholas's school picture.
"No."
His answer surprised everyone.
"I spent most of my life believing fear made people loyal."
He swallowed.
"Vincent proved what fear actually creates."
He looked at me.
"I want my children to grow up in a world where they don't have to hide because of my name."
I felt tears sting my eyes.
Arthur reached for my hand.
"Help me make that possible."
I squeezed his fingers.
"Then start by letting the law do its job."
He nodded.
"I will."
Two days later, Vincent Russo was arrested near the Canadian border.
He had attempted to leave the country using false identification.
Investigators recovered additional records connecting him to the warehouse fire that killed my father and the conspiracy that led to Luca's murder.
He faced charges for kidnapping, conspiracy, fraud, and multiple violent crimes.
Walter and Evelyn Carmichael also faced prosecution.
The adoption network was dismantled, and investigators began helping affected families locate missing relatives.
But the greatest moment came four days after Vincent's arrest.
Arthur stood inside a quiet family services center.
Beside him sat Rosie.
Across from him, Nicholas.
The little boy studied Arthur carefully.
"Are you really our dad?"
Arthur knelt.
"We're still finishing the official tests, buddy. But everything we've found tells me I am."
Nicholas looked at Rosie.
She nodded.
Then the boy asked, "Did you know we were gone?"
Arthur's eyes filled.
"No. I didn't."
"Would you have looked for us?"
"Every day."
Nicholas hesitated.
Then stepped forward.
Arthur opened his arms.
The boy hugged him.
Rosie joined them.
And for the first time in nine years, Arthur Romano held both his children.
I stood beside Eleanor, crying quietly.
Brutus rested his huge head against my leg.
Eleanor smiled.
"Your mother would have been proud of you."
I looked at the children.
Then at Arthur.
"I hope so."
She squeezed my hand.
"She always knew you'd find them."
Later that evening, Arthur asked me to walk with him beside the lake.
The sky was pink.
The water was calm.
For once, there were no threatening messages.
No black SUVs.
No secrets waiting in the dark.
He stopped beside a wooden bench.
"Maeve, I need to tell you something."
My heart began pounding.
"What?"
He looked nervous.
Arthur Romano.
The man who could silence an entire waterfront.
Nervous.
"I've spent my whole life believing I had to be stronger than everyone around me."
He took a breath.
"But you saved me when I couldn't even save myself."
I swallowed.
"Arthur..."
He reached for my hand.
"And somewhere between your terrible coffee, your stubborn arguments, and the way you care about my children..."
I laughed through tears.
"My coffee is excellent."
He smiled.
"...I fell in love with you."
The world seemed to stop.
Then he added quietly:
"But I don't want you to love me because I need saving."
He looked directly into my eyes.
"I want to become someone you can choose freely."
I stepped closer.
"Then there's something you should know."
His expression changed.
"What?"
May you like
I smiled through tears.
"I think I fell in love with you the night your dog ate my meatloaf."
