Chapter 9 - THE LAST VOYAGE

We returned to the ship.

Voss was waiting.

He stood on the bridge surrounded by armed men.

But this time, I wasn't afraid.

Neither was David.

We had already won the only battle that mattered.

The truth was public.

Voss looked at me.

“You think exposing the archive ends this?”

“No.”

I raised the key.

“This does.”

His face changed.

“You wouldn't.”

“My mother wanted it destroyed.”

“She built it!”

“She regretted it.”

Voss shook his head.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand enough.”

He looked at David.

“Your wife is going to destroy everything your family built.”

David stepped beside me.

“Good.”

Voss laughed.

“You're both fools.”

Then the doors opened.

Federal agents entered.

Voss's men surrendered.

Voss didn't.

He reached for a hidden weapon.

I moved first.

The weapon fell.

Voss stared at me.

“You were always like her.”

“Like who?”

“Your mother.”

I froze.

“She never begged.”

I looked at him.

“Neither do I.”

He was arrested.

The ship was secured.

The archive was destroyed.

For the first time in decades, the network had no hidden database, no secret fleet, no private army.

The people behind it were exposed.

Some were arrested.

Some resigned.

Some fled.

But the world finally knew their names.

Weeks later, David and I stood on a quiet beach.

No cameras.

No guards.

No luxury ship.

Just waves.

He looked at my hand.

“You still have your ring?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

He smiled.

“Good.”

“I don't want another one.”

“I wasn't going to propose.”

“Good.”

He laughed.

For the first time since our wedding, the sound felt real.

Then he became serious.

“I am sorry.”

“I know.”

“I should have told you.”

“I know.”

“I thought I could protect you.”

I looked at him.

“You don't have to protect me.”

“I know.”

He smiled.

“I'd rather stand beside you.”

I took his hand.

“That's better.”

Then someone called my name.

I turned.

Claire stood on the beach.

She was holding a small envelope.

“This arrived this morning.”

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

My mother.

David's father.

And another man.

A man I didn't recognize.

On the back was a single sentence:

VOSS WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING.

I looked at Claire.

“What does this mean?”

She looked toward the horizon.

“It means your mother didn't destroy the network.”

I stared.

May you like

“What?”

“She hid it.”
