Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN THEY COULDN'T SILENCE:

We found Emma in an abandoned office building near the Los Angeles waterfront.

Robert had chosen the location carefully.

Too empty for witnesses.

Too public for obvious violence.

The kind of place someone used when they believed money could erase consequences.

I entered with Margaret's investigator and two federal agents.

Daniel stayed behind.

He wanted to come.

I refused.

“You've already been compromised once.”

“I need to help my sister.”

“You will.”

“But not by walking into a trap.”

He nodded reluctantly.

We found Emma on the second floor.

Alive.

Bruised.

Terrified.

But conscious.

When she saw me, she started crying.

“Claire?”

“Yes.”

“How did you know?”

“Olivia helped.”

Emma nodded.

“Thank God.”

We freed her.

Then she gave us the folder.

“Everything is here.”

I opened it.

My grandmother's medical records.

Her private physician's notes.

Hospital records.

Prescription logs.

Then I found the final page.

Cause of death:

Intentional poisoning.

I froze.

“Who prescribed it?”

Emma pointed.

“Robert.”

Robert Carter had been my grandmother's private physician.

He had changed the dosage.

He had arranged the false death certificate.

He had then helped create the Carter family structure.

The same structure that was now targeting me.

I looked at Emma.

“Why did your family do this?”

She shook her head.

“My uncle became obsessed with the Vance estate.”

“Why?”

“He believed your grandmother had stolen something from him.”

“What?”

“A patent.”

I frowned.

“A technology patent?”

“Yes.”

A financial encryption system.

My grandmother had developed it with Robert decades earlier.

The system became the foundation of her wealth.

Robert believed he was owed part of it.

When she refused, he began taking money.

Then came the trust.

The shell companies.

The manipulation.

The plan to control me.

The affair with Olivia was simply the final stage.

I closed the folder.

“So Daniel knew?”

Emma looked at him through the open doorway.

“He knew pieces.”

“Not everything.”

“No.”

“Why didn't you tell him?”

“Because our mother threatened us.”

I understood.

Fear.

Again.

The same poison passed from generation to generation.

I looked at Emma.

“What do you want?”

She smiled sadly.

“To stop running.”

“You don't have to.”

“What will happen?”

“Justice.”

She nodded.

“That sounds good.”

We returned to San Diego.

The evidence was enough to force emergency proceedings.

Robert Carter was arrested.

Helen Carter was arrested.

Several shell companies were frozen.

Olivia agreed to cooperate.

Daniel surrendered every document he had.

The divorce proceedings began.

But there was still one problem.

The trust.

My grandmother's original trust was under my control.

And everyone wanted it.

Margaret sat across from me in my office.

“You have a decision.”

“What kind?”

“The trust can remain under your control.”

“Or?”

“You can dissolve it.”

I thought about the years.

The lies.

The manipulation.

The people who thought wealth gave them the right to control others.

“What happens if I dissolve it?”

“The assets go into independent charitable and family trusts.”

“Daniel gets nothing.”

“No.”

“Olivia?”

“Nothing.”

“Emma?”

“She gets protection.”

“What about Carter Holdings?”

“Destroyed.”

I thought about my grandmother.

Maybe she had created the trust to preserve her legacy.

But her legacy had been used as a weapon.

I knew what I needed to do.

“Dissolve it.”

Margaret smiled.

“I thought you'd say that.”

Then Daniel entered.

He looked exhausted.

“Claire.”

“Yes?”

“I need to tell you something.”

“What?”

He placed a document on my desk.

“My mother didn't start this.”

I stared.

“Who did?”

He looked at me.

“My grandfather.”

I froze.

Robert wasn't the mastermind.

His father was.

Except—

his grandfather had supposedly died forty years ago.

May you like

Daniel whispered:

“He's alive.”
