Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

The woman was not Elena.

That would have been too much, even for the Morettis.

She was Elena’s younger half-sister.

Lucia.

Same eyes.

Similar face.

Enough that exhausted officers believed the name she initially gave.

Why lie?

Because Paul had been hunting her too.

Lucia had disappeared twenty years earlier after Elena’s death.

She held the Luciana Fund records.

That was why the fund used Luca’s name and hers combined.

LUCA + LUCIANA.

Luciana.

She had built it with Elena.

Vincent stared at her.

“You were alive.”

Lucia laughed bitterly.

“So were half your siblings, apparently.”

Even Vincent almost smiled.

Luca stood frozen.

“You’re my aunt.”

“Yes.”

“Where were you?”

“Hiding from your family.”

Fair.

Lucia had the final financial records.

Proof of everything.

Anthony.

Paul.

Mara’s coerced involvement.

Elena’s investigation.

My father’s role.

My mother’s innocence.

And duplicate medical debts created against dozens of families.

Not just us.

Hundreds.

People paid fake bills for years.

Some lost homes.

Cars.

Insurance.

Maybe lives.

I thought of Mom gasping beside the oxygen machine while I argued with collection agencies.

Anger became something colder.

Useful.

Lucia looked at me.

“Your mother was supposed to receive restitution years ago.”

“Why didn’t she?”

“Because Vincent never activated the fund.”

I turned.

He looked confused.

“I didn’t know it existed.”

Lucia’s expression softened slightly.

“Elena feared that.”

Then she handed him a letter.

Different handwriting.

His father’s.

Vittorio Moretti.

He had found out about the fund after Elena died.

He chose not to activate it.

Why?

Because doing so would expose the Moretti organization’s financial crimes.

Vincent stared.

“So my father protected the family name.”

“At the expense of patients.”

“Yes.”

The pattern again.

Family before truth.

Power before people.

Vincent looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

I shook my head.

“You can’t apologize for him.”

“No.”

“Only for yourself.”

“Yes.”

Good.

Then Lucia explained the trust condition.

Vincent could activate the restitution fund now.

But he would have to certify publicly that Moretti-controlled charities had been used for fraud.

That would trigger audits.

Lawsuits.

Possibly criminal investigations.

Billions at risk.

Luca looked at his father.

I did too.

This was not about coffee anymore.

Not even Mom.

It was a choice.

Protect the empire.

Or repair what the empire broke.

Vincent asked:

“How many families?”

Lucia answered:

“Four hundred and eighty-seven.”

He did not hesitate.

“Activate it.”

Luca looked stunned.

“So fast?”

Vincent looked at him.

“I’ve already taken twenty years too long.”

Then my phone rang.

Hospital.

Mom was back.

Police had recovered her after Anthony’s arrest.

But her doctor wanted me there.

Immediately.

I froze.

“Why?”

May you like

The nurse’s voice softened.

“Your mother is asking for Vincent Moretti.”
