Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

The grocery bags hit the pavement.

An orange rolled beneath a park bench.

A carton of milk burst open.

But Lena didn't notice.

She couldn't breathe.

Across the grass stood the man whose photograph she had once hidden beneath a floorboard.

Ethan.

Her husband.

The man she had watched disappear five years ago.

The man she had been told was dead.

His eyes found hers.

For one terrible second, neither of them moved.

Then Lena whispered the name she had forbidden herself to say for five years.

“Ethan.”

His face went completely still.

The little girl between them looked from one adult to the other.

“Mommy?”

Lena rushed forward.

“Lena, stay there.”

Ethan's voice was low.

Not angry.

Not threatening.

Broken.

Lena stopped.

The little girl looked up at her mother.

“Mommy, you know him?”

Lena's heart shattered.

“Yes.”

Ethan stared at the child.

“How old is she?”

Lena said nothing.

His eyes moved from the girl's face to hers.

“Five?”

Lena's silence answered him.

Ethan took one step backward.

Five years.

Five years since the explosion.

Five years since the funeral.

Five years since the world had told him his wife was dead.

He looked at the little girl again.

Then his expression changed.

“What's her name?”

“Lena,” the woman said quietly.

The little girl frowned.

“Mommy named me after herself.”

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“Of course she did.”

Lena grabbed her daughter's hand.

“We have to go.”

Ethan didn't stop her.

Instead, he said something that made her blood run cold.

“I know you faked your death.”

Lena froze.

Her daughter looked confused.

Ethan continued.

“But I never knew why.”

Lena turned.

“You need to forget you saw us.”

“I tried.”

His eyes filled with pain.

“For five years.”

Then he looked at the little girl.

“But now I can't.”

Lena pulled her daughter behind her.

“Stay away from us.”

Ethan's expression hardened.

“Who is hunting you?”

She didn't answer.

“Lena.”

Still nothing.

He stepped closer.

“Was it my father?”

Her face betrayed her.

Ethan saw it.

His entire expression changed.

“My God.”

Lena whispered:

“Don't ask questions here.”

“Then where?”

She looked around the park.

At the joggers.

The families.

The cameras mounted on nearby buildings.

Then she noticed a black SUV parked across the street.

Her face drained of color.

“Run.”

Ethan followed her gaze.

The SUV's engine started.

Two men stepped out.

Lena grabbed her daughter's hand.

Ethan moved instantly.

“Get behind me.”

Lena stared at him.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand enough.”

The men began crossing the street.

One raised a phone.

The other touched his jacket.

Lena whispered:

“They found us.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Who?”

She swallowed.

“The people who killed you.”

Ethan's face hardened.

“They didn't kill me.”

Lena looked into his eyes.

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

“They tried.”

And suddenly the five-year-old girl looked up at Ethan and asked the question that changed everything.

“Are you my daddy?”

Ethan stopped breathing.

May you like

The men were getting closer.

And Lena realized the secret she had hidden for five years was no longer hers to control.
