Chapter 12 - THE ORDER THAT KILLED MICHAEL

Bianca had not ordered Michael killed.

But she had started the chain that killed him.

Years earlier, while living in hiding, she learned Michael planned to give Alessandro proof that Gianni was alive.

Bianca panicked.

She believed Alessandro would confront his father and die.

So she contacted an old associate.

Daniel Russo.

Her instruction was simple:

Delay Michael.

Take the documents.

Keep him away from Alessandro for forty-eight hours.

Daniel passed the request to Carlo.

Carlo passed it to Gianni.

A delay became intimidation.

Intimidation became sabotage.

Michael’s defective construction railing was not random.

No one intended, according to the available evidence, for him to fall.

But they knowingly created a dangerous situation.

Michael died.

Bianca spent three years carrying that guilt.

“I should have told you.”

Elena’s voice was quiet.

“Yes.”

“I was afraid you’d never help us.”

“Yes.”

“I was afraid Alessandro would hate me.”

He answered:

“I do.”

Bianca flinched.

Then Alessandro continued.

“And I love you.”

Everyone looked at him.

“Both can be true.”

It was one of the hardest things Elena had ever heard him say.

Federal investigators took Bianca’s statement.

Gianni.

Carlo.

Father Grady.

Marco.

Brian.

The entire network began collapsing under evidence that had taken years to assemble.

The vault was opened with both silver keys.

Inside were Michael’s records.

Original ledgers.

Audio.

Documents establishing his biological connection to Antonio DeLuca.

And one final video.

Michael.

Alive.

Sitting at a kitchen table.

Elena’s knees gave out.

She sat.

The screen flickered.

“If Elena is watching this, then I’m sorry.”

Her tears came instantly.

Michael explained everything.

He discovered his birth identity by accident.

He never cared about the DeLuca fortune.

He wanted it moved into a protected trust for Mila.

Not because he wanted her wealthy.

Because he wanted dangerous men legally unable to touch it.

“If you choose to refuse the money, Elena, refuse it.”

She laughed through tears.

Of course he knew her.

“But don’t refuse because you think being poor makes you morally cleaner.”

That one hurt.

“Money is a tool. People decide what it becomes.”

Michael looked off camera.

Then:

“And Alessandro.”

The mafia boss stiffened.

“If you’re there, I assume something went badly.”

A weak smile.

“Try not to solve it by terrifying everyone.”

Elena almost laughed.

Alessandro looked offended.

Michael continued.

“You once told me a man protects his family by making enemies afraid.”

His expression softened.

“I think you were wrong.”

Mila’s father leaned toward the camera.

“You protect family by making sure they are never afraid of you.”

Alessandro looked down.

The video ended with a message for Mila.

“She may not remember me.”

Elena covered her mouth.

“But tell her I loved her before I knew her name.”

Then the video stopped.

No dramatic music.

No final secret.

Until the lawyer opened the last envelope.

Michael had already created the trust.

The DeLuca assets were legally protected.

Mila would inherit nothing directly until thirty.

Before then, Elena controlled only one decision.

How the annual income was used.

The current yearly amount:

$4.7 million.

Elena stared at the number.

Then at the stale bread still sitting inside Mila’s grocery bag from two nights earlier.

She began laughing and crying at the same time.

Alessandro watched her.

“What will you do?”

May you like

Elena wiped her face.

“I have absolutely no idea.”
