Chapter 8 - THE MOTHER HE USED AS LEVERAGE

Clara did not cry.

Not immediately.

That frightened Nathaniel more.

She stood completely still.

“Where?”

Marcus shook his head.

“We’re tracing.”

Clara looked toward the door.

“I’m going.”

Nathaniel blocked nothing.

He only said:

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

He recognized the word.

The same way he had used it too often in business.

Clara continued:

“This is my mother.”

“Yes.”

“And these people came into my life because of you.”

That hurt.

Because it was true.

Nathaniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“I need to do this without becoming another person you manage.”

He swallowed.

“What do you need from me?”

She looked surprised.

Then:

“Resources.”

“Anything.”

“Not orders.”

“Understood.”

“Information.”

“You’ll have all of it.”

“And if I decide something you don’t like?”

He breathed.

“I tell you I don’t like it.”

“And?”

“And the decision remains yours.”

Clara nodded.

That was the first moment trust changed between them.

Not romance.

Not yet.

Respect.

Marcus located Alan’s vehicle near a private clinic in Massachusetts.

Clara’s mother, Maria Jensen, had been transferred there under forged emergency authorization.

Nathaniel’s jet left within an hour.

Clara sat beside Elias.

Nathaniel stayed across the aisle.

She noticed.

“Why are you sitting there?”

“You asked for space.”

“I asked not to be managed.”

“That sounded like space.”

Despite everything, she smiled faintly.

“Sit here.”

He did.

They found Maria sedated but alive.

Alan Royce was gone.

Again.

But he left a message.

A video.

Alan appeared on a monitor.

“Nathaniel.”

He looked tired.

Old.

Less like a villain than a frightened man.

That somehow made him worse.

“You think Victoria controlled this.”

Nathaniel stared.

“She did.”

Alan shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

“Charles.”

Nathaniel’s dead father.

“Charles Vaughn created the research.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Alan leaned toward the camera.

“You know he funded it.”

Nathaniel’s jaw tightened.

“What’s the difference?”

“He was a subject too.”

Silence.

Marcus frowned.

“What?”

Alan continued.

“The earliest compounds were tested on Charles.”

Nathaniel went still.

“By who?”

“His father.”

Nathaniel’s grandfather.

Clara stared.

The cruelty extended another generation.

Alan explained.

Charles had grown up under chemical manipulation.

Fear conditioning.

Memory alteration.

Behavioral experiments disguised as psychiatric treatment.

When he inherited the company, he did not destroy the system.

He expanded it.

Nathaniel whispered:

“He became the thing done to him.”

“Yes.”

Alan looked directly at him.

“And you’re next.”

Nathaniel’s face hardened.

“What does that mean?”

“Victoria didn’t arrange Camille only for money.”

Marcus stepped closer.

Alan continued.

“She wanted you married because your medical consent authority would transfer to a spouse in case of incapacity.”

Clara’s stomach dropped.

Nathaniel understood.

“If they drugged me…”

“Camille could authorize treatment.”

“Treatment?”

Alan smiled sadly.

“The Vaughn Protocol.”

Nathaniel went cold.

“They planned to use it on me.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

Alan paused.

“Your wedding night.”

Clara looked at Nathaniel.

Then the video continued.

“But Camille wasn’t the only one selected.”

Nathaniel frowned.

“What?”

Alan looked toward the camera.

“If she failed, Victoria had a second candidate.”

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

Clara.

Taken outside her night class two months earlier.

May you like

Nathaniel stopped breathing.

They had been watching her before she ever entered his house.
