Chapter 8 - THE PEOPLE WHO CLEANED THE TABLE

Two years after the Monday morning in boardroom, Hale Meridian looked different.
Not transformed into moral paradise.
Companies don't become virtuous because CEO learns lesson.
They become better or worse through systems, incentives, people, corrections.
Jonathan had learned to distrust redemption speeches.
He preferred audits.
The independent historical review concluded Hale Meridian owed more than public initially knew.
$41 million in wage remediation, contract penalties, worker support, and settlements across legacy outsourcing practices.
Shareholders sued board.
Some claims dismissed.
Some settled.
Jonathan personally lost substantial compensation and share value.
Fine.
Company survived.
Sterling Logistics did not remain intact.
Following fraud findings, lenders forced restructuring.
Its healthy distribution centers sold to multiple buyers.
Hale Meridian ultimately purchased three years later? Would be ironic. But only after independent process and at lower price? Could perhaps acquire assets, not company. Let's say they bought none to avoid.
Seven thousand employees found mixed outcomes. Jonathan hated that deal collapse caused uncertainty.
He worked with labor agencies and buyers on transition.
Not all jobs saved.
No fairy tale.
But buying fraudulent company at $980m wouldn't have guaranteed them either.
Natalie completed accounting certificate.
She accepted role in internal audit—not because Jonathan arranged but after application and panel where he recused.
She was good.
Painfully good.
Her first audit found executive meal reimbursements improperly categorized.
Jonathan owed $3,412.
She sent email:
Please reimburse within 10 business days.
He walked to her desk.
“You enjoy this?”
“Immensely.”
Ava, now eight, came after school occasionally.
She no longer wore adult sneakers.
She had opinions.
Jonathan had become family friend with clear boundaries.
No savior narrative.
Natalie dated? Perhaps later a teacher named Marcus? Could add but not necessary.
She remained focused.
Claire built worker advocacy consulting firm with Maya.
Her relationship with Graham remained estranged.
He served sentence? Convicted and imprisoned.
She visited once.
Similar accountability.
He said:
“I protected you from Sarah because I was afraid she'd take you.”
Claire answered:
“I was never an object she could take.”
Exactly.
She did not cut adoptive father from identity entirely.
Her late adoptive mother mattered.
Graham loved.
Also lied.

Complex.
Jonathan remained unmarried? Could give romance but user asks family drama, happy ending perhaps not romance needed. Yet more satisfying if Jonathan reconnects with personal life. Could introduce Monica? Better avoid workplace romance. Maybe he eventually starts relationship with pediatric surgeon? Not necessary.
