Chapter 13 - THE DAY THE MAFIA KING CHOSE JUSTICE

Ravi Greedy had spent his adult life surrounded by people who obeyed him because they were afraid.

But when he learned Gabriel had threatened my parents and used my family as leverage, he did something nobody expected.

He handed every remaining financial record to investigators.

Even the documents that exposed illegal activities connected to his own family.

I stood beside him inside Rebecca Sloan's office.

"Are you sure?" I asked.

He looked at me.

"About what?"

"Giving them everything."

Ravi nodded.

"My family has spent too long protecting secrets that destroy innocent lives."

He placed another folder on the desk.

"That ends with me."

Rebecca studied him.

"Some of these documents may result in additional scrutiny of your businesses."

"I understand."

"And your past."

Ravi's expression remained steady.

"I understand that too."

I looked at him.

For the first time, I saw something beyond the feared mafia boss.

A man who wanted to become better than the world expected him to be.

Over the following months, the case against Gabriel Greedy and Catherine Voss grew stronger.

Peter Shaw testified about the vehicle sabotage.

Financial experts reconstructed the missing trust payments.

Kiran described his kidnapping and the years he'd spent hiding.

My father's recordings helped establish the threats made against our family.

And several former employees came forward with evidence of Gabriel's financial crimes.

When the trial began, I sat beside Sadi in the courtroom.

She held my hand so tightly that my fingers ached.

"Ellie?"

"Yes?"

"Are we safe now?"

I looked toward the security officers.

Then toward Ravi, who sat across the aisle beside Kiran.

"We're safer than we were. And a lot of people are helping us."

Sadi nodded.

"Good."

The proceedings lasted several weeks.

Gabriel's attorneys challenged the recordings.

Catherine denied knowing about the sabotage.

But the combined evidence was substantial.

The jury ultimately convicted Gabriel on charges connected to the kidnapping conspiracy, financial fraud, and the deaths of my parents.

Catherine was convicted for her role in the financial scheme and the conspiracy surrounding the vehicle sabotage.

Their sentences ensured they would face serious consequences for what they'd done.

I didn't cheer.

I didn't smile.

I simply cried.

Because no courtroom victory could bring Mom and Dad back.

But for the first time in two years, I knew their deaths had not been forgotten.

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Ravi.

"Mr. Greedy, is it true you're restructuring your businesses?"

"Yes."

"Are you leaving organized crime?"

Ravi looked directly at the cameras.

"I'm ending my involvement in unlawful operations and cooperating with the authorities."

Another reporter shouted:

"Has Diane Harper influenced your decision?"

Ravi glanced toward me.

Then smiled faintly.

"Miss Harper reminded me that power means nothing without responsibility."

My cheeks warmed.

Sadi tugged my sleeve.

"Ellie?"

"What?"

"Does that mean he likes you?"

I nearly laughed.

"Sadi!"

She grinned.

"I think he does."

Later that evening, Ravi invited me to dinner.

Not at an expensive nightclub.

Not at a private mansion.

At a small Italian restaurant overlooking the Hudson River.

We sat beside the window.

For the first time, neither of us had a terrible secret to discuss.

Ravi looked nervous.

I noticed immediately.

"What's wrong?"

He smiled.

"Nothing."

"You're lying."

He laughed softly.

"You're very observant."

"I had to be."

He reached across the table.

"May I hold your hand?"

I nodded.

His fingers closed gently around mine.

"Diane, there's something I've wanted to tell you for months."

My heart beat faster.

"What?"

His expression softened.

"I didn't expect you to change my life."

I smiled faintly.

"All I did was kiss a stranger for money."

He laughed.

"That's how it started."

Then he grew serious.

"But somewhere along the way, I fell in love with you."

I stared.

The restaurant seemed to disappear around us.

"Ravi..."

He squeezed my hand.

"You don't owe me anything. Not because of your father. Not because of the trust. Not because I've helped your family."

Tears filled my eyes.

"I know."

He looked surprised.

"You do?"

I smiled.

"And I love you too."

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

Then he laughed.

A genuine, happy laugh.

He leaned closer.

"May I kiss you?"

I nodded.

"Yes."

And this time, when Ravi Greedy kissed me, there was no wager.

No audience.

No frightened security guard.

Only two people who had chosen each other.

But our happiness came with one final surprise.

The following morning, Rebecca called.

The court had approved the return of the recovered Harper trust assets.

And the final accounting revealed something nobody expected.

May you like

My father had left instructions for how the money should be used if both he and my mother died.

Instructions that could change Sadi's future forever.
